Find your reason

Find your reason

There’s a little myth floating around about our brand, Skilled Athlete and we’d like to de-bunk the following. You do not need to be an athlete to carry our brand. You do not need to have an exceptional skill to wear our brand.

The reason we chose the name Skilled Athlete, was to inspire. If anything we have shared with you, stirred you to action, that was a victory for us. Whether we know about it or not.

In order to pursue your goals, you require dedication. But this is the hard part, before something becomes dedication, it requires inspiration. We are all human, and experience our highs and lows. Our dedication to pursuing our goals drags us through these lows, whatever they may be. This is what defines us, everyone will inevitably achieve one goal in their life - it is your dedication to excellence that will continue to set new ones after this.

Remember; “The man on top of the mountain did not fall there.” (I can’t remember who said this originally so forgive us for not attributing it correctly.)

The following is by Dr. Dan Pronk and this is his version:

“Week in, week out I lift, the progress at times imperceptibly small or non-existent, however slowly but surely over time I edge towards my goals. My goals are humble but they are my own and give me a focus as to the end point of my current effort.

Whether I hit my goals or not is largely inconsequential, and if I do, I will simply set new ones further from my new limits of physical capability at the time. What is important is the process, the discipline, the path to the goals. I am accountable only to myself, I compete against no one except the reflection in the mirror. There is no one to chastise me for missing a session, no one to judge me for drinking a beer when I get home from work instead of hitting the platform. It is what we do when no one else is watching that really counts - this is the true discipline! Go out there and chase your goals - whether you hit them or not is of secondary importance, it is the process of goal setting and striving forward that evolves you as a human being.”

Thanks Nigel, if anything we’ve said or done has motivated someone into action that is a major victory for us. We love the work you’re doing with a fresh idea surrounding the RSL’s and you’ve got our support mate.

Much love,

Ted

I love the blogs you guys post, and find I can relate to the practical information your offering. As a chap now in my late fifties, and having always trained in one discipline or another from early teens until I was in my mid thirties, I’ve found the pressure of a business life left me with little time or energy to pursue a healthy and fit lifestyle, or at least one that I would’ve considered acceptable to my previous standards. It’s easy to get in the mindset where because you can’t maintain a standard you had for many years you simply decide to not train at all. It might be hard for some to understand that decision but when your committed to a working life that simply doesn’t provide much free time you realize two things, the first is your committed to a lifestyle your body can’t maintain forever, and secondly, you have the balance between work and lifestyle out of proportion. Like I said, I’m coming to an age now, and find myself in a position that allows me to be more flexible, re-balance life a little, and start to look after the body and my health again. Through IG and FB I’ve met some great individuals, people who are admittedly at different stages of their life than I am, but I am lucky enough to interact with guys that have kept abreast of the advancements in sports training and health. They have a world of new information that guys like me simply didn’t have, or had to work out for themselves to a degree. Being lucky enough to connect with Ted and Sam from Skilled Athlete is a god send and I fully intend to delve into their world of training and programs to assist me in getting back some of that fitness and resulting health that I sadly miss, and have for some time. I have a second reason for establishing a connection with these two guys! We’re about to embark on a setting up a training gym at our local RSL branch to help members and hopefully some of the disadvantaged youth in our area. We hope to offer a place for them to come, train, improve their lives and health, interact with people who care about them. In doing this we need good solid advice on a range of related topics. Now we do have a good group of guys who can offer various skills in this regard, but, sport is always advancing, it’s come a long way in the last twenty years, so we need to take our skills and add new ones, skills from people who are currently at the top of their game. It’s not that any of us are interested in competing again, most of us are way over that, the younger people who may train with us might have a different outlook on that, but mainly this gym is a place where anyone in the community who wants can come along and have the opportunity to maintain a better lifestyle. we hope to offer this at little cost in comparison to more expensive gym’s, and if we succeed in anything, it might be that a place to train, for some who wish, isn’t compromised by finances or availability, or for those who have never had the opportunity it might just become a reality. So we’ll keep in touch over time and let you know how our gym is going, and with a little help from the boys “Skilled”, I reckon we have a good chance of meeting our goals…..

If you’ve been following this page for a while, you’re probably no stranger to our outspoken views on the preservation of memorials, commemorations and our shrines. There is a reason we rage against the abject politicisation of these things.

We will always speak our truth, especially if this goes against the grain of the popular narrative. This is our why.

LEGENDARY ACHIEVEMENTS: Eero Mäntyranta

February 23, 2023

Who is he and why are we talking about him?

For a long time, he held the highest ever recorded VO2max. Let's dig in.

Eero Mäntyranta was a Finnish cross-country skier who won seven Olympic medals, including three gold medals, in the 1960s. Mäntyranta's success in skiing was attributed to his exceptionally high VO2max, measured at a staggering 96 ml/kg/min.
